Went to see The Sapphires today. Excellent movie, thought provoking without being heavy and a great performance from Chris O'Dowd.
My favourite line is when Dave, (O'Dowd's character) is trying to explain the difference between Country & Western, and Soul. He describes C&W as '... lost everything, now you're at home whining about it...' [snicker]

Here's the trailer:

Last night (night before?) I was dreaming I was staying at someone's house. The room I was using had a private shower that was basically just the plumbing coming out of the wall near the window and spraying directly on to the floorboards. No shower curtain, no recess, and no drainage save for what looked like a hole in the rotting skirting board.
I shifted the furniture out of the way as far as possible, so it wouldn't be splashed, and was prepared to put towels down to soak up the water.
Also, I'd bought a whole frozen fish to nosh on later. [shrug]

Holiday breakfast :)

Interesting that they're not promoted anymore as 'part of your balanced breakfast'...

There were also exhortations on the cereal box about exercise and how playing outside is fun!!!
Since the rise of hysteria over the 'epidemic' of childhood obesity, all of the food companies that target children - and their parents - are doing this sort of thing, so that when the righteous finger of indignation is pointed at them for contributing to the 'plague' they can claim, hand on heart, that it's not their fault, see? They're promoting a healthy lifestyle, see...?

Organising fiction files on Nigel Coriolus this evening I realised I was missing the 180k word manuscript I wrote several years ago. I knew I had it backed up somewhere even if the backup hadn't been transferred to the new 'puter when I got it.
...
I couldn't find the backup.
...
Ploughed through 4 years worth of discs and couldn't find a single mention. I could only conclude that the files were on discs that had somehow been misplaced. Not a happy thought!

Before I let myself have a melt down I told Joules of my predicament and she - may the colours of the rainbow surround and protect her - did have copies.
[wilt]
So yes, now I have backups all over the place. Let this be a lesson to me.

Dreaming last night I was at my parents' old house. I discovered that the back-door didn't latch and that anyone could've let themselves in at any time. This made me very uneasy.
I found a bunch of old, mixed keys and carefully sorted through them for the key to the back screen door. I thought that while it wasn't that much of a barrier it would at least be something.
Having done that I looked further and found the key to the back door! At first it looked like the door could only be locked from the outside but I checked again, and lo, I could actually lock the door from the inside as well. The house was safe again, and I felt I'd done my duty or something, considering I really don't like the place...

Tonight after work I trotted along to a Library meet-up thing with ex classmates and teachers for snacky noms and drinks, and lively discussions about library stuff. :)

Last night the cubs and I met up with Aaron at the Astor to see The Avengers. Fun movie, very quotable! ("Dost Mother know thou wearest her drapes?" :)
I find myself slightly obsessed with intrigued by Loki. Not sure why; like most of those 'beyond reason' he scares the daylights out of me!
And, he called Black Widow a 'mewling quim'! I gasped. No one else did. I wondered if I was the only person there who knew what it meant. That, or I was the only person there who hadn't seen the movie yet...

'twas interesting at work today. The new library management system is coming online soon and we've had to shut down the old to transfer data across. Unfortunately, we're not able to use the offline version of the new LMS yet - that problem is 'being looked in to' - so a spreadsheet is being used temporarily to keep track of loans and returns. Cataloguing, updating records and registering new users will just have to wait. Hopefully it will be sorted by the end of the week.

I haz anti-virus software on my phone now, thanks to AVG. I feel a bit safer browsing. :)

Hee, and oddly enough, my laptop picks up our neighbours' - on either side - wifi thingies. This makes me think we might be able to use wifi in our concrete house. Still not sure how I feel about that, though. I haven't poked the tech with a stick for long enough yet to be sure of it.

"A morgue file is a place to keep post production materials for use of reference, an inactive job file... The term "morgue file" is popular in the newspaper business to describe the file that holds past issues flats. Although the term has been used by illustrators, comic book artist, designers and teachers as well...")

Yesterday was kind of weird. Got home from work about 6 then mooched around for a couple of hours trying to work up the enthusiasm to eat something other than toast. Eventually realised I just wanted to go to bed. So I did, nice and early, to the cubs' surprise. Mostly slept all the way through - except for a stumble out to the loo about 11 - and managed to get up early enough this morning to beat the secondary alarm.
Felt better today but it took most of the day to reorient myself to the 'now'. The weather didn't help, my spirit always feels wispy and scattered when the wind is up...

But, one of the things that's been niggling at me has been resolved. Spoke to the estate agent today about staying on for another year and apparently the owner is fine with that so I'll be signing a new lease soon. Woot.

Gorgeous sunny day today. It only got to 19 but it felt much hotter in the city, where I was this afternoon gettin' sum culcha.

I went in to the NGV to see the Light Works exhibition. Unfortunately it wasn't as fab as I'd anticipated. Twenty-ish works in total; a couple of beautiful Bill Henson skyscapes and one of Hiroshi Sugimoto's 'Theaters'* were the highlights for me. I'd particularly been looking forward to seeing a selection of HS's work. Eh well.
So, only spent a little while there then skipped over to the 19th/20th century rooms and got very squee-y.

My favourite painting was back! The last few times I'd been in the gallery it hadn't been on display.

Saison d'octobre; Jules Bastien-Lepage, 1878.

Big canvas - almost 2m x 2m and the light is just luminous...

Also finally got a good pic of this little ceramic horse. Previously it's always been in a display cabinet and I was never able to get close enough.

Horse; Michael Powolny (designer), Wierner Keramik (manufacturer), c1910.

I'm eternally enchanted by the life and roundness of this piece.

Wandered around outside in the sculpture garden, somewhere I haven't been for years, then decided to treat myself to an afternoon tea at the posh cafe on the first floor.

Was elegant and delicious an' all but really not worth the price. Still, was glad I was able to do something nice for myself with my tax money.
Before leaving I visited the gift shop and spent considerably less.
Picked up some lovely postcards, including one of my fav painting, andandand a poster of the same! Going to have to give some thought in how I want that framed...

There's more pics, naturally, but I'll put those up on flickr tomorrow.

Watched Batman Returns today. (Watched it twice, sort of, cos I fell asleep half an hour in to the first time viewing, waking up to the end credits so had to put it on again...)
I like this movie now more than I did when it first came out, not least cos my Batman canon-fascism has mellowed somewhat. Was still very impressed with Tim Burton's vision of the world-frame and this time I liked both versions of the Penguin and Cat Woman. Found them a bit cringe-worthy initially but now, yep, I get them.
I still think Michael Keaton made an excellent Batman and the 'unmasking' scene at the party is still one of my favourite heartwrenchingly poignant scenes.

Cos I was working at the close campus today I indulged a little, turned off the secondary alarm and decided to get a bit more sleep. Two or three bouts of ten minute snooze-alarm should do.
The dreams got more intense and vivid (Soulsis, her chiks, cubs and I heading to the moon in a station wagon? Really? Craig Daniel* in a London thieves' den? Really?) and I eventually dragged myself out of sleep to find I'd been out for an extra hour. Of course, now I was running late and had to scramble to get out of the house: fortunately I'd made my lunch the night before. Second dentist appointment today and another $250 down. [wince] This was the worst of the fillings though so the rest shouldn't be so bad. Essentially the old amalgam filling had to come out then what was left of the tooth - not a lot after chipping - was repacked with new ceramicy stuff. There's a chance the tooth will continue to chip but for the moment it's more stable than it was. Having a crown put on it would prevent more chipping but considering the cost of the procedure is roughly equal to a month's rent, it's not financially practical just at the moment.

We went to see The Dark Knight Rises this afternoon. Aside from a slow spot in the middle - and a very lame fight scene - it was pretty bloody good! Plotty twists and turns; ubercool gadgets. Drama! Tragedy! Very satisfying.
Interestingly though, there were times I had to cover my recently-operated-on ear cos the movie was so loud it hurt! I think that's a good thing...

Okay, so Batman Forever is not the best of the franchise evah, but neither is it the worst. (Jim Carrey as the Riddler is not an asset - I found myself growling at him to 'Oh, just stop!' - but the Riddler's costuming is superb.)

Robin (Chris O'Donell) looks a bit of orright.

I did enjoy the slashiness: it wasn't particularly subtle (or that could've just been me...)
At one point Two Face (Tommy Lee Jones) had Robin and Chase Meridian (Nicole Kidman) trapped in giant tubes with the intention of making Batman chose which one dies first. (Yeah, this movie was definitely looking backwards to the 60's tv series.) Anyway, Two Face introduces the 'contestants' as 'the love of Batman's life' and I, giggling, finished the statement with, 'and some woman he's been hanging around with'.

... still giggling. :)

Last performance of the school musical went well, with Badger receiving lots of congratulations on his convincing German accent, again. There was a cast party afterwards, with pizza and lollies.
The cubs have a curriculum day tomorrow, so no school and the chance of a lie in. I think they both need it.

This time last week I was realising that I wasn't going to have a comfortable night, post-operatively.

Wow, it's been a week already. I've finished the oral antibots but still have several days of the ear drops to finish.
I still have a small area of numbness on my tongue, and a pretty much constant sort of aftertaste of saccharine. Mildly annoying but not inconvenient. Other than that my sense of taste has more or less returned to normal.

Still can't judge how my hearing has changed, though it clearly has. Some types of sounds are much louder while with others there's been no change at all. I'll be having another hearing test in a few weeks, once everything has hopefully settled down, then I'll have a clearer picture of what's going on.

Got my tax sorted today! Put it through online - easy peasy. I believe I'm owed a rebate but exactly how much remains to be seen...

The coolest souvenir!

It occured to me that I've kept everything, or nearly everything that's been taken out of me in hospitals. I've got this bone, and my wisdom teeth, and ok, didn't keep the tonsils but they grew back, and didn't keep the placenta but I did hang on to the babies. :)

For all that the cubs' school is general academic and not performing arts there's definitely some talent there.
Badger did very well, with a convincing German accent. :)

Ok, so not quite as ready to rejoin the living as I'd thought. Went out for a coffee with Penny then had a browse at JB which I had to cut short cos I started feeling a bit woozy. Still, picked up the 3 'Girl with the dragon tattoo' movies, and a copy of 'Batman Forever'. :)

The school musical debuts tomorrow night: Fame Jr. (No link, cos I couldn't find one that didn't have embedded music, or didn't mention the cubs' school.)
Badger has a small speaking role, and he's been hard at work at rehearsals. Barely saw him this weekend. Ah, it brings back memories of my own high school performance thingies...

Right, almost feel ready to rejoin the living. :)

Haven't managed to take a pic yet of the teeny ear bone that was replaced, but to demonstrate here's a considerably larger model from Scienceworks, 2008.

It's the stapes, that stirrupey shaped bone in the middle...
